Joseph S. Fastow, M.D., President & Medical Director, Biography

Joseph S. Fastow, M.D., M.P.H. is the founder, president & medical director of Physician Management, Ltd. (founded in 1975) and Joseph S. Fastow, M.D., P.A. (founded in 1985). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and he received his BA in Biological Sciences from Rutgers University, his M.D. from Boston University School of Medicine and his M.P.H. in Comprehensive Health Planning from The Johns Hopkins University, School of Hygiene & Public Health as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar. His clinical training includes an Internship at Pennsylvania Hospital in Internal Medicine; Assistant Resident in Anesthesiology at George Washington University Hospital, and an Emergency Medicine Residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is board certified in emergency medicine and a Fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians. He oversees the operation of 17 hospital contracts for professional services in emergency medicine, urgent care, hospitalist, intensivist & house coverage employing 130 physicians.
In addition to his clinical and administrative responsibilities, Dr. Fastow has held many leadership positions during his 30 plus year career. These include Chairman of Council and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland (Med Chi)(Maryland State Medical Society), President of the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, President of the Calvert County Medical Society and Director of Emergency Services at Calvert Memorial Hospital. He has held clinical faculty positions at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Georgetown University School of Medicine and is currently a Senior Associate in the Department of Health Policy & Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Dr. Fastow has had numerous publications in professional journals on topics related to medical malpractice and emergency medicine. These publications include the Annals of Emergency Medicine, the American Journal of Emergency Medicine and various publications of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has been a tireless advocate for medical liability reform at the state and national level and is currently working with Common Good to bring a health courts proposal to the Maryland legislature. He has served on the Legislative Committees of Med Chi and the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians for the past two decades and has been an active participant in the legislative process in Maryland, testifying before House and Senate committees on issues related to medical malpractice, small market health insurance reform and emergency medical issues as well as serving on taskforces of the Maryland Healthcare Access & Cost Commission, Medical Mutual Liability Insurance Society of Maryland and the Maryland Hospital Association. Dr. Fastow has given numerous local and national presentations on medical liability in emergency medicine, the business of medicine from the emergency medicine perspective, and the impending crisis in physician manpower and distribution.
